The authors present the results obtained with 129 multibacillary smear positive leprosy patients who were treated with clofazimine for more than 1 year in addition to dapsone from Oct. 1973 to Aug. 1984 in the Leprosy Mission, Jesus Hospital. The dosages of clofazimine given to 53 patients with lepra reaction varied from 100§· /day to 300§·/day according to severity of reaction in various period up to 27 months with 300§·/day. After reaction was controlled they were maintained on 50§·/day till negative conversion of BI. For therapeutic effect in 76 Patients, 50-100§·/day were given till smear negativity. The total mean duration of clofazimine administration was 42.6 months. Bacterial clearance as judged by the duration of negative conversion of BI was comparable to that of dapsone monotherapy. The average control period of ENL and neuralgia was 8 months and 15 month respectively. The incidence rate of reaction in patients treated with clofazimine from the begining was as low as 9.3%. The skin pigmentation varied in relation to the dosage of clofazimine. However therapeutic dosage of 50§·/day was acceptable in most patient and mild gastrointestinal complaints were negligible. |
