Among leprosy patients treated at the Institute for Leprosy Research, Korean Leprosy Control Association, 82 cases refused multidrug therapy with clofazimine were selected for the studies. They have been treated with Isoprodian two tablets daily and rifampicin 600 mg, clofazimine 300§· once monthly and observed the influence exerted their liver damage, and the following results were obtained. 1. Of total 82 cases,37 cases (45%) were shown abnormality of liver function tests (SGOT and SGPT), and 18 cases (22%) were stopped hoprodian treatment due to high raised value (more than 100 units) of SGOT and SGPT. Majority of them have appeared their liver damage after six months of treatment and some showed liver damage after one year of treatment. 2. 16 cases with liver damage which shown higtl units of SGOT and SGPT were given DDS and clofazimine after stop hoprodian and routine liver function test was carried out monthly and 1 it was resulted that all of them recovered normal liver function within six months after change of drugs. This is suggested that prothionamide included in koprodian gives liver damage to the patients. 3. Because the frequency of liver damage is high due to Isoprodian or prothionamidef it is recommended that multidrug therapy with DDS, rifampicin and clofazimine is more preferable to leprosy patients with multibacillary type due to less side-effects until new effective drugs introduce. |
